What is dancing? Some think dancing is devilish in the church?
Before we go deeper into the questions that we have concerning dancing in the New Testament Church as some would in this age call the body of Christ. Let us first get a clear understanding of what dance or dancing means and what it consists of us doing. That way we can begin to know for sure if dancing is devilish in the Church.
Webster’s Dictionary defines dance or dancing as this:
1. Primarily, to leap or spring; hence, to leap or move with measured steps, regulated by a tune, sung or played on a musical instrument; to leap or step with graceful motions of the body, corresponding to the sound of the voice or an instrument.
I like that part about ” to leap or step with graceful motions of the body”.
Where do you think the dance or dancing come from?
The scripture teaches us this…that all things were created by him and for him. You will find these words in Colossians 1:16. Who do you suppose those words are referring too? Well, let me put it to you this way. Who has the leading role in the Bible? Yes, you guessed it…Jesus (GOD) they are one. More on that some other time. But I guess I say all of that to say this… God created the dance, and it was created by him and for him.
Well, what about all of the sensuality that you see in dancing.
Just about everything. Well, I take that back everything that God created on the face of this earth was and is to this day defected and infected by the fall of 🚹 man and the sin that entered into the world with that fall.
Satan has corrupted everything in some shape or form. The word of God tells us in Romans 8:19 how the whole of creation is waiting eagerly for the redemption of mankind.
So, you see the sensuality that we witness in the dance was brought on by the lust of the flesh brought on by sin. This started a long time ago. As a matter of fact the sensuality of the dance cost one great biblical figure his head. Now that ought to tell how powerful the dance can be.
Can we honor God with dancing?
Well, before I give you my answer and what the Bible teaches us on dance.
I must emphasize this… We find the word dance or dancing 21 times in the bible. Yet I’m only going discuss only a few in this article though. So, let us look at one event found in Exodus 15:20 where we find “dancing” this is where we see where Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron picks up the timbrel and all the women behind her picked up their instruments and began to do a victory dance unto the Lord.
Now let’s jump ahead to the New Testament
This is where we discover an example of a devilish dance. In Matthew 14:6 you will find the story of an event that took place at King Herod’s birthday celebration. This is where we find that his wife Herodias’s daughter danced for the king. We also find that the young woman’s dancing pleased king Herod so much that he was willing to give her half of his kingdom. Yet she did not want the kingdom. She didn’t know what she wanted, so, at the devilish request of her wicked mother, she asked for the head of the great Prophet- John the Baptist.
Now back to the Old Testament Saints
Now I want us to take a look at King David. The Bible tells us that David was a man after God’s own heart.
Acts 13:22 1Samuel 13:14.
In 2Samuel 6:14 we find King David the leader and commander of the nation of Israel dancing in the streets and in the presence of everyone. Surely this is not dignified behavior. Right? I mean, after all, he’s is the king.
So, here’s what we find out… While King David was doing his holy dance, his wife, and daughter of the former king, Saul, was also watching him from a window, and seeing David leaping and dancing and praising the Lord God despised him in her heart.
The story goes on to tell us that she even had the nerve to approach David with contempt as she spoke against his behavior. But here’s what happened after David set her straight for her contempt. You see, David let her know first hand that God deserves every bit of praise that is within us, be it with our lips, whether it on an instrument of strings in song, and yes, my brothers and sisters, especially in the dance.
Here is what tells me and assures me that God is honored by our dancing to him. The word of God tells us that Michal Saul’s daughter and King David’s wife womb was shut up and she could not have children all of her days. Even unto her death.
Here is something to think about…Remember the wedding in Cana that the bible talks about in the Gospel Of John? You know the one that the mother of Jesus attended, The one where both Jesus and all the disciples were called to. Okay, maybe this will jog your memory. It’s the one where Jesus turns the water into wine.
So, think about this. Here is Jesus at a wedding celebration where there is lots of eating and drinking of wine…I mean folks just having a grand ole time. Now, seeing how the Lord Jesus interacted with the common folk throughout the scripture, do you think that he was just being a wallflower and not joining in on all of the festivities including the dancing. Well. personally, I would like to think that our Lord took a spin or two on the dance floor.
We are Instructed to Dance
Why do I say that we are instructed to dance? I’m so glad you asked. Man oh man I’m so glad you asked! So, if you would ever so kindly look with me please in the largest book in the Bible. Yes, you guessed it, the Book of Psalms, and in Psalms 149:3 where it reads like this“Let them praise his name in the dance” Psalms 150:4 does it like this. “Praise him with the timbrel and dance”. I don’t know about you, but to me, the evidence speaks for itself.
Let me wrap things up here
It was the Lord Jesus himself that told us that it is the traditions of man that makes the word of God of none effect in our lives and in the body of Christ. Over the centuries there have been many traditions and doctrines of devils to creep into the Church collectively and in the individual lives of many followers of the Lord Jesus.
It was also Jesus that declared that he is The Way, The Truth, and The Life, and no man can come unto the Father but by him. John 14:6. He also left us with this in John 8:32 “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
So, you see it’s not what man thinks or say. And it should not be because of the traditions of the Church or man that we should determine how we are going to love, serve, and praise God. We should do it according to how the scripture commands us too. And doing so, by adding nothing to it, nor taking anything from it. So let all thing be done decently and in order, and let us worship Our God in Spirit and in Truth even in the dance.
Hey, I would really love to know what your thoughts are on dancing in the Church. So please leave a comment in the comment section below, or you could just say hello. I would love to hear from you. Until next time.
Stay focused and be blessed.
