The Pressure of Retaliation-SLT Podcast Episode 012

SLT Crosses

Hello, and welcome to this episode of the Speak Life Today Podcast. I’m your host Felton Thompkins, Gospel Minister and Ambassador for Jesus Christ our Lord. My prayer is that all is well with you and that you are learning to trust in our Heavenly Father’s goodness and love towards you. Now on this episode of the Speak Life Today Podcast, I will be scratching the surface of a topic that many of us are failing to adhere to….and it is on the topic of retaliation or as some might say, getting even. As I was pondering on what this week’s episode of the SLT Podcast would be about, an event happened to me on the job that I really struggled with. I thought about it, and I earnestly prayed about it. And until I ran across this study series through the book of James of which I will accredit most of what you are about to hear is from a teaching that I received from my good friend and Sunday School Teacher in whom I will refer to as JB. And it was not until God the Holy Spirit orchestrated the events of my paths and this teaching to cross did I begin to experience relief and freedom from the earlier event. Hence, we have this episode.

The question is what makes us want to get even? Chances are you already know the answer to that. Yet I beseech you beloved to indulge me for the sake of this episode that I may expound on a few things that we all must not only consider but also put into practice.

You see saints of God, THE LAW HAS BEEN USED AND MISSED USED, EXCUSED AND ABUSED DOWN THROUGH THE CENTURIES. MAN, HAS USED THE LAW TO TREAT OTHERS AS HE HAS WISHED AND WISHES TOO. BUT, CHRIST CHANGED THE LAW. HE SAYS that we as CHRISTIANS ARE NOT TO RENDER EVIL FOR EVIL; WE ARE NOT TO BEAR A GRUDGE OR SEEK REVENGE. WE MUST GO BEYOND AND FORGIVE. HOWEVER, THE world believes THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO AVOID AND RESIST EVIL FOR SECURITY’S SAKE. (MATTHEW 5:38-42; ROMANS 12:16-21 gives us a totally different perspective on how God intended for us to live towards one another. And His Intent has not changed for the follower of Christ.

Before we go any further let’s read what the Lord Jesus have to say about retaliation and getting even. Matthew 5:38-42. And as you may already know, I love to use a lot of the word of God in my episodes, and that’s because I truly believe that the word of God must be the first and last thing that we adhere to in Matthew 5:38-42.

v.38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:SLT Crosses

Mat 5:39  But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Mat 5:40  And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.

Mat 5:41  And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Mat 5:42  Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

No doubt beloved these are some very challenging statements.

Now let’s also take a look in Romans 12:16-21.

Rom 12:16  Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Rom 12:17  Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

Rom 12:18  If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Rom 12:19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Rom 12:20  Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Rom 12:21  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The law was given and is given to the courts to guide the judges in the execution of justice.

Here are a few KEY things for us to consider when seeking justice:  Being Patient, The Blessedness of God,  and the ability to Endure.

Patient: means long tempered, it carries with it, the idea of waiting while depending on God. We can find encouragement in the book of James 5:7-9.

Patience: is not sitting back and doing nothing. James gives us something that we can practice.

  1. We Strengthen our hearts by being patient, calling out to God, and asking for His strength.
  2. And also we must stay positive in our attitude: This causes us to do life without complaining or arguing.

Blessed: -THE Greek word describes the happiness a believer can experience even

While suffering. (v. 10-11).

ENDURE: -This means to have withstood with courage, especially under pressure. (v. 11)

Here is an illustration of someone that caved in under the pressure of retaliation: At age73, a man by the name of Carl Ericsson was sentenced to life in prison. He’s going to Spend the rest of his life in jail because he decided to exact revenge on a

Former high school classmate who did him wrong. Ericsson found out

Where his old classmate lived, ranged the man’s doorbell, asked him his

Name, and then shot him to death. What prompted the shooting? The

The starling answer apparently was a 1950’s locker room humiliation that

Festered in Ericsson’s mind for a Half-CENTURY.

The Apostle JAMES WROTE TO FIRST CENTURY CHRISTIANS WHO KNEW FIRST-HAND THE PAIN OF MISTREATMENT AND THE PREASURE TO EXACT REVENGE.

“To retaliate” MEANS to repay (as an injury) FOR THE like; “to grudge, avenge, or punish.” The classic passage that we as believers should adhere is Deut. 32:35, To me belongeth vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.  God is telling us in this passage of scripture to not take things in our own hand and to patiently trust in his kind of justice and His right way of avenging us. You see beloved God’s way of justice could very well lead that person who has wronged you or me in any way to repentance and to that person being saved.

In the New Testament Romans 12:19-21; It reads like this…

Rom 12:19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Rom 12:20  Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Rom 12:21  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Here are a few more verses to study, Hebrews 10:30; 1st. Peter 2:14; 2nd. Cor. 7 :11.; 2nd. Thessalonians 1:8.

CHRIST IS SAYING “RESIST NOT EVIL,” What does he mean by that? THAT IS, DO NOT SEEK EVIL FOR EVIL, AND DO NOT SEEK REVENGE OR LOOK FOR A CHANCE TO RETALIATE” BUT FORGIVE, GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO HELP THOSE WHO DO EVIL AGAINST YOU. You show them mercy, commit your cause to God, (Prov. 16:3), Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

The Lord would say, Gen. 50:20, Satan meant it for evil, but God meant it for good. Many of us know that this is what God commands of us, and yet there is still within us….

The Pressure Of Retaliation.

The question remains; what makes you and me, want to get even or retaliate?

  1. Lack of trust in God.
  2. Pride- We are too concerned about what others think, or if we look to be weak.
  3. Patience- Our ability to wait on the justice of God.

The Holy Spirit through the apostle James and many other servants of the Lord teaches us not to cave in to the pressure of retaliation.  Because it is forbidden. Why?

Because; Retaliation does not solve anything.

Retaliation is not pleasing to God. Romans 12:17-18 and James 5:9.

James offers us two solutions to dealing with the need to retaliate.

The Christian’s response to being wronged is to…,

  1. By trusting in the justice of God: Knowing that He can do a better job in exacting justice than we can.

Romans 12:17-19; Recompense to no man evil for evil.

James 5:17-18 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

Jas 5:18  And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

Which leads us to the second solution that the scripture admonishes.

We must be long suffering: because it takes a long time for God to get angry. PSALM 103:1-14.

  1. lt (patience) strengthens your heart, patience is a choice, not a feeling Gal. 5:22. We read about the fruit of the Spirit. It’s the Spirit’s work.
  2. God rewards: you are waiting for God to strengthen your heart (James 5:7-11).

Jas 5:7  Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Jas 5:8  Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

Jas 5:9  Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

Jas 5:10  Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

Jas 5:11  Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Why choose patience?  Well beloved let me just reiterate a few things and it is because God can and will do a better job of repaying than we can.

Patience is the evidence of God’s love inside of us. 1Cor.13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Just replace the word charity with love.

Choosing patience strengthens our hearts James 5:8.

It is crucial that we remember that choosing patience strengthens our heart against retaliation.

God is better at repaying than we are. He knows what will work and when it will work,

And what changes a heart.’ Love from the heart is shown in the demonstration of mercy as seen in the Gospel of Luke 10:25-37. There you will find the story of the good Samaritan.

Here’s another QUESTION for us: What emotions do we feel when you read James’s words to the rich? James 5:1-5. Read that when you get a chance and see what stirs in you.

When you or I leave retaliation in God’s hands: We end the cycle of violence (Prov.25:21-22)

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

Pro 25:22  For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

The bible tells us that Joseph was wronged by his very own brothers. Gen. 37:50. Mercy proves we have the right kind of love in our heart.

Jesus was reviled and wronged more than any of us can ever imagine too be. He suffered tremendously. He has left us His example, and through the power given to us by the Holy Spirit we can and must follow in His steps.

CONCLUSION: The effective response is not to cave into the pressure of retaliation, but instead it is to yield to God’s leadership.

You see saints of God; THE LAW WAS GIVEN TO CONTROL THE IRRESPONSIBLE AND.UNREGULATED PASSIONS OF MEN: TO CONTROL EVIL AND LIMIT RETALIATION AND REVENGE.

THE LAW WAS GIVEN AS A RESTRAINT FOR SIN. (EX.21.:24. (Rom. 13:1-9) You see beloved saints of God the spirit of the law was to teach us that we are to treat others with the same love and respect that we desire for ourself. Not to exact revenge.
