Using Our Words Aright; You Get What You Say!
Hello, and welcome to this episode of The Speak Life Today Podcast. I’m your host, Felton Thompkins, Gospel Minister and Ambassador for Jesus Christ our Lord. On this episode of The Speak Life Today Podcast, we will talk about the importance of using our words aright. And if you have been following this Podcast you have heard me mention, how, that long ago, God the Holy Spirit convinced me of the importance of using our word in a correct manner.
Listen, beloved, from the beginning of the Holy Scripture to the end of the Holy Scriptures, God is commanding us, instructing us, reproving us, and encouraging us, to use our words aright. But I’m here to tell you that not many of us are truly taking God at his word when he tells us that” Death and Life are in the power of the tongue… Proverbs 18:21 and as I’m sure you know that’s our life verse for the Speak Life Today Podcast.
Seriously saints we must begin to reevaluate the way that we have been using our speech and stop seeing the Word of God as though the scriptures are a bunch of cute sayings that we carelessly toss around to portray how spiritual we are. And to be quite honest with you brothers and sisters in Christ, it is sometimes very hard to distinguish the believer from the unbeliever by the words that comes out of our mouths. I mean really saints of God, we sometimes hear more profane language coming out of the mouths of those of us who profess to be followers of The Lord Jesus, than that of the unbeliever. Beloved of God, this should not be.
Now, do you think that I said all of that to convince you that the things that I say, and the way that I say them are always aright? And that everything that comes out of my mouth rejoices the heart of God? Beloved, the answer to that, is a big No! But here’s what I do… “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus my Lord and Savior”. Listen, this is the attitude that we must take or adopt in every area of our Christian walk of faith. And especially when it comes to growth and maturity as a believer and follower of The Lord Jesus.
Let me take a moment to digress here, because some of you, that may be listening may have heard me say this in the introduction episode of the Speak Life Today Podcast. And it’s, how God The Father spoke to me these words… He said to me, Felton, you know where the Bible says that my word will not return onto me void? I said yes. And God went on to say that, Well, Felton you are my son, and you are made in my image, So, your words won’t return to you void either. Wow! I can still remember that as though it was yesterday.
I mentioned earlier how God from the beginning of the holy scripture to the end of the holy scripture, wants us to see and understand the significance of using our words aright and the power that our words, truly have.
With that being said, Let’s take short journey through the Word of God, that we may discover some truths to help us to get our speech in line with our Heavenly Father’s. And there’s no better place to start than at the beginning. Come with me if you will to the book of Genesis, and I’ll began reading in chapter 1 and in verse 1 and it reads… In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. Hmmmmm, I wonder how He did that? Let’s read on a little further, maybe we can find out. Genesis 1:2 goes on to say… And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved or hovered upon the face of the waters. Now, let’s skip on down to Genesis 1:6-10 and it reads… And God said, let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. v.7 And God made the firmament and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament and it was so. v.8 A God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. v.9 And God said, let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. v.10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. Wow! Can you imagine all of that force with all of that water rushing around? That had to be a spectacular sight.
I want us to take notice to 2-(two) very short, yet very powerful phrases, and they are “God said and God called”. Listen to these words that our Heavenly Father gave to the Prophet Isaiah to share with us. You will find this in Isaiah 55:10 “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: v.11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Listen saints of God, right before God created us, male and female, he spoke these words. “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Do you see where the Holy Spirit is taking us with this? You see saints of God, the bible teaches us in Galatians 5:7 “Be not deceived, God is not mocked: ( or made a fool of) for whatsoever a man or (woman) soweth, that shall he or (she) also reap. And he tells us in Genesis 8:22 “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Beloved get this, and believe this. The words that come out of our mouths are seeds and those seeds are going to bring forth a harvest. Could this be one of the reason that God tells us to be quick to hear and slow to speak? I do believe so.
Listen, the topic of using our words aright can be a long discussion, and in many cases the word of God that speaks to us about what we should be talking about and how we should be talking? The scriptures speak for themselves. For example; when the bible tells us that “death and life are in the power of the tongue…” How much more plain or straight forward can the Holy Spirit be? But, here’s the thing. I believe the enemy Satan has the majority of us thinking and believing that we don’t really have to be careful of what we say. He will bring a thought like this to mind. It doesn’t take all of that! I beg to differ, and I beseech you beloved to reconsider and know that it takes all of that and more. You see that’s where the casting down imagination and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God comes into play. We have to, learn how to combat the lies of the wicked one, by taking every thought captive and by bringing our thoughts and intents under the rule and authority of God’s word.
Now, again, with that being said. For the remainder of this episode of The Speak Life Today Podcast, I want you to follow along with me through the Word of God and let’s look at few of the verses that The Holy Spirit has given us for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righteousness, or in other words, let’s see what He has given us to teach us how to use our tongues in the correct manner.
We see in several verses in the book of Beginnings, (Genesis) where this particular statement is made; “and God saw that it was good.” Beloved of God, ponder on this thought. Seeing that we are made in the image of God after His likeness, when we speak right things, not only will we rejoice the heart of our heavenly Father, but we will witness the manifestation of good things coming to pass in our lives as well as the lives of our loved ones. And this can only come from having a good and right verbal conversation by not speaking our own words, but by putting the word of God in our mouths. Help me to bless the name of Jesus for giving us the keys to the Kingdom. Hallelujah, and glory to his name!
Well you guessed it, our first verse of admonition is non-other than Proverbs 18:21-Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
When I read this verse of scripture, I get this question; Which one do you love, death or life? There’s a short story in the bible where Jesus asked his disciples if they were going to leave off from following him? And Simon Peter replied to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. John 6:68. Sounds like to me that they realized that the needed more of Jesus and less of themselves.
As a matter of fact, let’s go over and see what the apostle Peter had to say about our speaking. 1st Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.
Psalms 34:12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
Listen to what the apostle James told us in James 1:26. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth or control, not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain (empty).
Our Lord Jesus told us that; A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45 Beloved the words that we speak reveal a lot about us. And if the heart is dirty it can only be cleansed by the washing of water by the word. Ephesians 5:26. As believers, we are cleansed by the word that the Lord Jesus has spoken to us and continues to speak. John 15:3
Proverbs 13:2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Proverbs 12:14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man’s hand shall be rendered unto him. You get what you say!
Until the next time always remember Proverbs 18:21 Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. If the Lord wills? I’ll talk to you soon, God bless you, and Speak Life Today!
